In 2024, IPALA will host three virtual research education webinars.
Professor Peter Morris will chair each session. Professor Morris is an Australian based hospital clinician and visiting pediatrician to the Tiwi Islands. He is interested in clinical trials and systematic reviews of interventions for important childhood conditions. Professor Morris teaches medical students through the Northern Territory Clinical School, supports doctors and nurses working at the Royal Darwin Hospital, and supervises students and staff within the Menzies School of Health Research. His research focus is on intervention studies and the application of evidence in practice.
Webinar 1: Wednesday 19th June, 2024
"The Research Question"
This webinar will describe the clinical epidemiology approach to framing a good clinical research question. How can the Population, Intervention/Exposure, Comparison, Outcome, and Time framework be adapted? What are its strengths and weaknesses. Are there any other options?
Webinar 2: Wednesday 4th September, 2024
"Measuring Impact"
This webinar will describe the GRADE approach (Grading Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation) to the assessment of evidence. Key features of The GRADE Handbook will be covered including quality versus certainty, effect size, types of outcomes, and how recommendations about interventions and impact should be worded.
Webinar 3: Wednesday 4th December, 2024
"How to Know What is Important"
This webinar will describe what Global Burden of Disease data is available and how these resources can be used by pediatric leaders. We will also discuss the neglected issues of preferences, cost, feasibility, and context (including the role of the social determinants of health). Thoughts on how leaders can challenge the status quo will be presented.

Each webinar will follow a similar format.
There will be 30 minute presentation with 30 minute discussion (1 hour in total).
Examples will be taken from Trevor Duke's 2022-2023 Summary of RCTs from Low and Middle Income Countries. Links and references will be provided for further self-directed learning. The presentations will encourage discussion of the benefits and harms of research and how research could be improved in the future. The materials covered will be relevant to both clinicians who do research and clinicians who use research.
It is free to attend (no cost) and an attendance certificate will be provided.
